Fire Codes and Hotels
How many times have you heard that you cannot fit your larger family into a hotel room because you exceed the maximum number of people and it’s a violation against the fire code? Have you wondered how legitimate this fire code reason is? Ever wondered why they allow rollaways and cribs but not a child sleeping on the floor?
Over at Travels with Children; one of Linda’s readers, Jenny, looked into the no room for five because of fire code reason.
After calling the fire department, Jenny discovered that this is NOT a legitimate reason to disallow 5 people in a room for 4. It is NOT a violation of fire code. This is in fact a corporate reason not to allow groups of five in a room for four.
Sounds like hotel employees have been given set perimeters to make families/groups of five upgrade to a suite. Now I don’t think the front desk employees do this to be mean. I don’t think they even think about it or know the reason why these rules are in place.
The fire safety violation rule is just something they’ve been taught as true. And in today’s economy, everyone’s holding on dearly to their jobs. You’re going to have a tough time finding anyone who’s willing to bend the rules for you.
I think the five people in a room for four situation has quite a bit of gray area. Families of five with little kiddos who can sleep three sideways in a bed can make two doubles or two queens work for them. But where does the hotel desk clerk draw the line?
Would it just be easier to charge extra for the fifth person?
Tell me what you think.
Remember at SixSuitcaseTravel.com we have almost 3000 hotels for six, some for eight. For travelers on a budget; we’ve found great rooms, not expensive suites, at many of the Choice Hotel chains, Baymont Suites, Travelodge, and Days Inn. Hop on over to find your next hotel room.

Family Travel Bucket List
Thursday Travel Thoughts
![]()
You’ve heard of a bucket list, a list of what you want to do or accomplish before you die. Do you have a travel bucket list? How about a bucket list for traveling with your children?
Since the economy has been so poor, many of us have had to change that list. Have you? Tell me about places you’d like to travel with your big family before they leave the nest. It doesn’t have to be fancy. We’re not talking trips to Paris here, unless of course, it’s on your list.
Here’s a few from mine:
- Yellowstone National Park
- The Grand Canyon
- DC
- Mexico
Tell me about yours.

Thursday Travel Thoughts
Cruises
I’ve been thinking about expanding SixSuitcaseTravel into cruises. It will be interesting to see how many cruise lines have cabins for big families.
So tell me, would you be interested in cruises for large families? Have you been a cruise with your big family of 5, 6, 7, or 8?
